Concerning human cities
I play D&D
And on sunday we have this game , it's been going on for quite a while now .It's had it's up and downs and i must say the DM has a plot so twisted and with so many loose ends i cannot see the end of them.
He either has the mind of a genious or simply adds unfitting bits as he goes along , it just boggles the mind .
Recently ( which is only as far as i can clearly remember) it's been great , maybe because we got to play our original characters again.
Yes he made us play a 2nd set :(
But anyway one thing has bugged me .
The human cities , i pretty much feel that the cities are getting tedious ,tiring and pretty much all the same .
EHH
These are what i have noticed so far (8 years of roleplaying with the same people give you quite a template)
1)All cities are away from the sea.
Why the docks are so cool and they give a city the reason to exist ?
2)All cities have a sort of Captain vimes , Nobby Knobbs and Sergant Colon kind of watch with uncorruptable guards .
3)All wizards sound the same ! ok it's the same guy making the voices but is there any other type of wizard apart from a)scheming senachal b)helpful oldguy with a vegtable in his ear
4)There is never a clear reason why the city stands where it is !
Neither Economical nor military .Even in my retarded country they bult the cities either over defensiible platous between ports or on top of the biggest hill.
5)The fortifications They are all pretty much 20 ft high aprox 8 feet thick and completly solid with maybe one or 2 city doors. With murder holes obviously.
Why can't they be a long tunnel ? or a higher wall ? or rooms within the walls ? thicker walls ? Jesus the Romans built walls in italy that dwarved the french Arc de triumph . Here we have pretty much MAZES built inside our city walls which are not open to the public .
6)The castle/keep inside the citywalls , all made out of bricks , over some reputedly older dungeon complex . In which the players will prety much never get inside . HUH ?
Can't it be a bit different just for once to spice things up ? Even stormwind has a USELESS moat around it from the times when only the castle stood in the middle of nowhere!
7)Urban renewal , if you say this city is so old why doesn't it chane in time ? This doesn't need to be ankh morpork which is reputadly built on top of itself each time the river overflows but come on!
An older unused road ?
An old tunnel made redundant by a shifting of the ground or by building a newer one ?
Small unused houses which are not thought as trendy anymore ?
8)Why are all houses occupied ?over here in an older area 1 house over 10 at least is just boarded up and unused , And sometimes unopened by anyone for Decades upon decades . Why is every single house full up!
9) I dn not want to mention any barrels her but does the fat mousta ched bartender have to be there ? Do they breed them for the purpose?
If you are fat and a moustache you shall fail as an adventurer and open your own inn ? Or you grow the moustache and gain wait as soon as you stop dodging hydras !
10) Shrines temples etc etc i think they got these ones quite right a few temples of the goody goods some hidden shrines to evil gods fine i even like the werewolves in the sewers venerating blank blocks of obsidian gods idea sometimes (to a certain limit) . But why do people venerate 1 god ! At those times people were different you gave offerings to the gods out of fear! Deary me my wheat i'd better offer something to Grandmother Acorn. Ah i am a smithy working semi molten iron all day i d better give something to that dwarven cleric for his god i like my skin uncharred thankyou. Whew those waves i vomit all the time at sea maybe an offering to the water goddess and i won't have to know how deep the ocean is .and so on.
11 What if for a change it was not such a benevolent king ? sometimes kings die and shit happens but can't it be the king himself who is not a bloody shing paladin with a goatie and a crown and a definite lack of chin ?What about an uncaring king ? What about a tyrant ? But a solid tyrant not one whom the characters make plots to destroy . A priesthood maybe ? it is concievable The Vatican managed so why not in a fantasy world ? Republics are a bit dodgy but might work too
Complete anarchy could work too but things would get quite messy over the long time but it would be fun for a while.
12 INNS and stuff you sleep at an inn no ? but why do you also drink and eat at an inn ? Isn't there supposed to be different places for that ? Or even posh places where you are not allowed to get in ?
13 The racisim ,I have nothing against different colored people yellow black red . Really i worked with them and shook hands with them every day . They are persons like us but i get a shiver down my spine whenever i touch one . I am a racist ? maybe i dunno i d hate to be but still i d rather be with my own kind. So why don't the locals treat the different raced differently ? and on the other hand as most cities have different histories some races should be attacked on sight and some others somewhat welcomed .Tourisim is rare in those days no ?
14) Houses have 1 storey and a cellar with a bottom stone walled building and a top wood ? ok it works good design maybe ? but why the hell not something different for a change and why is all the city always made of the same material ?
15)where does the material come from? you build a city you need stones for stones you need a quarry no ? where is the quarry ? Over here one city was built with such a hurry the quarry for most of the city was the city itself ergo a nice hill became a gradual slope as people cut their building blocks from yet unsold plots further inside the peninsula.
16)Sewage is a great idea i mean the sewer system really . Weather people have pipes direct from homes or if the maretial goes through gutters in the streets into underground tunnels one must agree it is a necessity even though having thatched wagons coming weekly to collect the'material from a black well serving a whole city section to dump it far away is also an idea in heavy urbanised settings.
17)Coins don't necessarly need to be made of gold silver copper etc
whatabout silver inside copper , or gold in silver disc or just bloody copper that is worth so much so says the king or your head falls off ?
Paper notes would also work , and forgers would actually use that skill for something (and be busted eventuually) . That would also make adventurers bringing back unknown GOLDEN coins from the tomb of MINTOrFF quite hard to explain under a difficult government .
And so on and on
What i am trying to say is the dungeon master does a great job he has to be the eyes ears and sometimes noze and memories of the players .In my case we have a very talented and immaginative person doing that JOB but sometimes as we all do he falls in stereotypes . An inn with a fat BUTTERBUR innkeeper , the unbendable guard , the jolly halfling thief playing cards are stereotypes which have been tried tested and do work but if we keep on relying on them we shall let our minds athrophy into senility. After that one might describe the royal city of Gluttonia as just the city leaving the characters to automatically give it a size a square 1 storey solid wall , a shaggy guard with a cigarette shortsword and pike at the gates a single inn with an overweight permanently sweating bartender bald or with receeding hairline .
If one avoids these things our mind shall stay sharp awaiting the words coming from our senses and memories clinging to the DM's lips for a life not our own.
